At what age can I get started?

Although many Korean karate schools enroll students as young as 4 and 5 years of age, we believe it is more desirable to start children at an older age. Therefore, we start children at our school at around 7 or 8 years of age. Furthermore, there are children at other schools who have black belts at 10, 11, or 12 years of age, but this is unheard of in Uechi/Shohei Ryu because a child has to be 16 years of age before he/she can be tested for a black belt. These are the guidelines from Okinawa. Some Uechi/Shohei schools award junior black belts for those exceptional karate students who are under 16 years of age. Currently, there is debate, pro and con, for the awarding of a junior black belt rank.
